An Unauthorised Shrine to R. A. MacAvoy (1949- )
R. A. MacAvoy writes wonderful science fiction and fantasy novels. Her stories are full of interesting and original twists and turns (for example, you can't be certain that the main character will not die - several times, in one case…), and she treats her characters with respect. She her writing style varies between each series of novels that she's done, but her work is always neat, realistically characterised, and completely enthralling. More details...
News!
R.A. MacAvoy has released a new book!
In Between tells a story about Ewen Young, a young artist (both visual and martial). At only 104 pages it's a quick read, but a good one - managing to cover life and death, Buddhism, and lots of character. She has stated in the past that “Language and character interest me. Plot does not, but I understand I'd better have one if anyone's to read my book.” (Contemporary Authors, vol. 113) In this book she's certainly leaned away from a traditional plotline which takes us from here to here with a big and sudden climax at the end, but I certainly felt emotionally satisfied at the end. It should particularly interest fans of her Lens of the World series.
As of December 2009: the signed limited edition hardcover still seems to be available (500 copies total). Go Between is available from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
Her most recent other fiction is The Go-Between - a super-cheap online novella for under 50c, only available to US residents. So annoying!
